Understanding the Domain Lifecycle

A domain name goes through several stages from registration to expiration. Understanding this lifecycle helps prevent accidental loss of a domain.

Active Domain

  • Domain is registered and active
  • Website and email function normally
  • Renewal date is visible in the client area

Expiration

  • Occurs if the domain is not renewed on time
  • Website and email may stop working
  • Domain enters a grace period

Grace Period

  • Typically lasts a few days to weeks
  • Domain can still be renewed
  • Additional fees may apply

Redemption Period

  • Domain is no longer easily recoverable
  • Higher restoration fees apply
  • Not guaranteed to succeed

Pending Deletion

  • Domain is scheduled for deletion
  • Cannot be renewed or recovered
  • Becomes available for public registration

Keeping auto-renew enabled is strongly recommended.
