Understanding the Domain Lifecycle
A domain name goes through several stages from registration to expiration. Understanding this lifecycle helps prevent accidental loss of a domain.
Active Domain
- Domain is registered and active
- Website and email function normally
- Renewal date is visible in the client area
Expiration
- Occurs if the domain is not renewed on time
- Website and email may stop working
- Domain enters a grace period
Grace Period
- Typically lasts a few days to weeks
- Domain can still be renewed
- Additional fees may apply
Redemption Period
- Domain is no longer easily recoverable
- Higher restoration fees apply
- Not guaranteed to succeed
Pending Deletion
- Domain is scheduled for deletion
- Cannot be renewed or recovered
- Becomes available for public registration
Keeping auto-renew enabled is strongly recommended.
